SUPERPOWER

Its strength lurks underground! Perennial sow thistle roots have been recorded at 10 feet deep within the soil. But if you attack with tillage, you can strengthen the perennial sow thistle by moving its dormant underground root buds around.

DESCRIPTION

This weed prefers moist, fertile soils. It spreads in two ways: its seeds are carried by the wind; and it has a creeping root system that sends up new shoots from buds on its root system.

HOW TO DEFEAT THIS VILLAIN

Crop Choice

Lentils & Peas – AVOID

Canola – Use a high registered rate for season-long control with enough regrowth to get it again in fall.

Cereals - Weigh the cost of products that control versus those that only burn back a little, because if you choose a product with limited activity (typically less expensive) you are depending on fall application. You will need to weaken the plants in-crop in order to effectively kill them in fall.

HERBICIDE

  • Wheat:  Axial® Xtreme iPak or Velocity m3 + MCPA gives you just enough activity to weaken perennial sow thistle but keep it active enough to get regrowth for a fall application of Roundup Transorb® and a multiple modes of action (MMOA) partner like Distinct®.
  • Wheat & Barley: Cirpreme™, Prestige™ XC, Curtail® M.
  • Oats: Prestige XC.
  • Canola:  Transorb, Liberty®.
